Another Classic September day

September 20th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

This morning at around midday we took of from the southerly site of Lastra, straight into good climbs (to 5m/s), but luckily with only weak southerly winds.  I flew home to Piedrahita, and the others after an hour or so flying landed in front of the hill.  By 3pm the wind was on the hill […]

Classic September day

September 19th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

Almost no meteo wind, with gentle anabatic winds the whole day through with superb Cu.  Plenty of flying, with 4 flights and the best flight for Colin, who along with myself had a nice flight to Barco.  Once at Barco conditions were pumping, but Colin needed to land for the usual nicoteen and Cafeen fix.  […]

Fantastic evening flying with wave at Lastra

September 17th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

Too windy during the day, but epic soaring conditions alongside Griffon and Black vultures from 6.30pm.  Light wave and thermals till near dusk to 500m above take off.

Winter preparation for some off my Bees.

September 17th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

My bees at around 1600m near Tortoles have had a tough summer.   Although there is abundant bloom in spring, the southern part of the valley is very dry and there seems little forage for July and August.  One of my best looking hives in spring, which I expected to reach 3 Warre boxes had almost […]

Strong south winds

September 16th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

A bright sunny day, with no wind early in the morning showed good promise.  However, strong southerlies came down by midday.  Bourki and Achim Joos did some filming at Lastra during the morning, but with stronger winds that would have been safe to fly in for recreational pilots.  We sat out till late at Lastra, […]

Monday15th Sept. early stablility then big climbs later

September 15th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

With our small group form Holland, France and the UK we made 5 trips up the hill today.  At around 3.30 pm the inversions finally broke and I left a huge climb when passing through 2800m to go to the valley and land for some tandems I had arranged.  Charlie from the DHV was filming […]

Prize giving and hungover Sunday for many.

September 15th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

17 plots made it to goal at 96km.  The prize giving was a big affair amongst hoards of town folk on the main stage, during a rest period for the Band.  Plenty of drunken  revelers.  In fact, most of the pilots on the goal bus were well pissed by 11pm when we arrived, and by […]

A valid task at last. 90km and beyond Plasencia

September 13th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

The final task for the GO, with light NNE winds but a poor blue ceiling of around 2200m. A 92km task along the N110 to the west, over the Tornavacas pass, through the Cherry tree valley and beyond Plasencia. The gaggles moved very slow and cautiously towards the pass. So slow in fact that I […]

Some flying

September 12th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

Too much wind and poor thermic conditions on this cold day with sunny skies. Many pilots free flew, some reporting better conditions in the valley. Bad news for the German league, as it cannot now validate a champion even if we fly tomorrow. Good luck for Oliver Rossell, who remains German Champion from last year […]
