Rob and Ian. A titanic struggle.

September 30th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

In the friendly comp between Rob and Ian (reminiscent of Keith and Rod – See August), Rob today came out winner with a flight to Barco, and Ian dropping out at Santiago de Collado.  Ian made the better flight yesterday, so Rob is only marginally ahead now. Rob should thank Catherine who marked the thermals […]

Fluffy gets away.

September 29th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

A nice start to the week for our Sussex group.  Catherine, Gary, Emily (Fluffy) and Ian were also out in May, which coincided with the worse rains in over 100 years.  Catherine and Gary came back for some good flying in July (Along with Rod and Nick of the same group), and I am glad […]

650m above Chia

September 27th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

The final day of 6 consecutive flying days for our Manx group (and one Cumbrian) group.  Today the wind refused to come in onto Peña Negra, so a trip to Chia.  Two nice soaring flights with good thermal climbs and some good circuit flying especially by Colin. This was a week with initially an atrocious […]

Another Classic September day

September 26th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

A day very similar to yesterday, with climbs to 2500, and some climbs near 5m/s.  On the XC flight once again we went to Barco, trying to get beyond, but failing to get the decent climb after the river.  Watty and Pete in Barco the others at Santiago de Collado.

2500m, light winds and few Cu.

September 25th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

A buoyant morning flight, then another XC flight to Barco for Watsy and Colin.  Bill and Pete got a good way along the course, but Mike and Phil bombed at the Chalets.  Conditions dropped of quickly in the evening, giving little more than a flight down.

Another excellent September day

September 24th, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

Light N winds with a higher base of around 2600 today, with some climbs near 5m/s near Barco.   A lifty morning flight, then a jaunt to Barco for the majority of the Isle of Man boys.  Classic evening conditions with most making the ridge run and back.  I did two tandems in the evening for […]

3 flights with nice September weather.

September 23rd, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

Although the day started with mist and low cloud-base, by 1pm the mountain was clear with a good distribution of Cu around the valley.  For the first flight conditions were quite light, but for the second good climbs to 4m/s could be found.   An evening flight with about 15km/hr at take off, but a bit […]

3 Gentle flights

September 22nd, 2008 - Posted by Steve Ham

Although the forecast was against us, the weather was ok.  An interesting early flight, all arriving over town with altitude and small Cu’s (mist formations) setting up at around 300m.   Large towering Cu´s all day, but with little convective power, allowing us flights during the afternoon.
