The trough seems to have moved more NE and today we should start out with light N winds, perhaps moving more to the NW by the late afternoon.  It will be cold , zero degrees C at cloud base this morning (2600m), and cloud development should be restricted.  However, later in the afternoon we will see some greater growth and the occasional towering cumulus, though storms are unlikely.  Also it will warm up to around 5 degrees at base.

Due to shifting winds it is likely that the  Barco direction (to the west ) is best early on, perhaps with a return flight from there.  Due to the persistent instability it will probably be a bit too exciting in the Ambles (Avila) Valley, but circuit flights between Barco de Avila and the Villatoro Pass should be realistic.  Thermals and perhaps overdevelopment of Cu will be held back by some upper level cirrus which will work in our favour I imagine.

What Happened

Nice day with good Cu and thermals.  A good bunch Barco and beyond in the morning and a migration to the Pass for the evening flight.

Winds forecasts are now showing good light direction from SW W NW, so it will come onto Peña Negra launch.  However, cold air aloft and low pressure almost guarantee a day of growing Cbs .   Wind at launch at 9am was SE light.  There is already a significant Cb growing to the west of Barco and a regeneration of clouds to the north of the valley from last nights storm.  Small chance of a flight from PN if it comes on before 11 – 11-30 or maybe at Chia.

Jorge and I will be there to leave at 10,30 if conditions don´t deteriorate before then.  Today is the peak of instability with improvement from now on.

What Happened.

There is nothing easy about today.  South winds which once again are on the strong side, and deep instability which will most probably lead to Cbs by mid afternoon.

However, winds are lightening by around pm and moving to the  West so it should come onto PN for the evening flight , if we are not dodging towering Cbs.

Less wind today but still from the SW and unlikely to come onto Peña Negra.  Acceptable level at low levels but windy at altitude.  Still unstable enough to generate Cbs.  Still not the best of days but worth having a look this morning  unless by 11am it is coming in strong in the valley.

For those looking to get the sightseeing bus (Helen )(10.44 to Madrid) then you are not too late yet.  This day is totally unsuitable for safe enjoyable PB .

No the best day for XC paragliding.  We  have a trough over central spain  and th super level instability could lead to some  problems of towering clouds , rain and even storms.  The south wind won’t help us as we will have to wait for it to come on at PN or go to our inferior S site (the normal S site is closed to the end of the month due to Vultures fledging.  If we get going it is best to move to the north away from the mountains and to stay out of the Avila valley which is often the  most affected by storms.
