More walking weeks planned.

We are planning to have two more walking weeks in October 2008. The weeks will run from Sunday to Sunday and will start on October 19th and October 26th.

Take off reconditioning started

After a long delay, the improvement of the take off has finally started. Improvements to the access of the car park and some rain drains have been started to be dug to the top launch. Also some of the larger boulders have been dug out. The idea is to remove the large boulders and cover the take off with gravel. Negotiations are also underway for the large landing field (used in comps in the past and often with horses).

Best rain in 34 years!

In early April the whole of Spain was worried about the reservoirs being to low to see us through the year, with water restriction starting to come into effect in many regions. Rainfall in April was about normal for this region, however, after April, things generally start to dry up quite quickly. On the northern tablelands it is generally dry outside April and end of October/November…….sort of why it is a good place for flying. Read the rest of this entry »

El Tormes

Rain and wind so we went to the river Tormes for some boating. The normal sections were far too high, but nobody was that interested in the really high section as it looked a bit tame so we ended up running a mid section which soon proved to be perhaps not such a good idea. The powerful flow set up very large wave trains and some largish stoppers the over the first section which would have made for a very uncomfortable swim. Although Paul and Remko and expert boaters, the novice rafters could have got into problems so we cut the route short at La Angostura before reaching the classic bigger rapids.

Glider testing and Swarms

Wednesday gave us some showery conditions. After an early flight, we only managed an evening flight when things had calmed down. Dave got to fly the new Airwave Sport 4 which we have in as a demo(see photo), and Steve is on his second day now of demoing the Niviuk Hook. Read the rest of this entry »

Avila at last!

Yesterday, Monday, some our new group managed the three flights, though generally with local soaring. Today however, a normal day, with good Cu a base around 2800m and light NW winds. On he early flight Keith and myself flew to Read the rest of this entry »

At last, a cracking day

After a disappointing weather week Saturday finally came up with some interesting conditions. The Cu was only just above take off for the morning flight, but Rob and Ian managed a flight along the valley, with Rob crossing the pass leaving Ian with a long walk out form the dead end valley just before. For the XC flight most of the group got to near the pass, with Rob just slipping over again, and Nick taking the classic and higher route over the high ground. Nick managed some scrappy climbs after the pass to land at 29km. The evening flight gave us a classic evening restitution enabling everyone, including Julie on the tandem with me, to to the 16km out and return to the corrals landing at sunset back at Piedrahita.

Salamanca and Power Kites

A dismal weather day with strong southerly winds. A cultural trip to Salamanca including the biltong tour…..Catholic relics of St Teresas elbow, heart and the arm in the box in the Cathedral. A big lunch in El Corrillo then frog spotting and back to Piedrahita for a bit of power kiting.

Romeria de La Virgen de la Vega

Today was the Romeria de la Virgen de la Vega, when all the town goes 5km north of town to the hermitage where the Virgen is kept. A meal is provided by the town hall. Nice flying conditions throughout the day with base of around 2500m, good Cu development from early on, but some larger congestus later in the afternoon. Three flights for our new group ( mainly from Sussex). The photo is of Rob and Ian, who made the most of the first flight with some good thermal climb outs in the valley.

Sightseeing in Avila and Rafting in the Tormes

Our second non flyable day. No storms but big build ups and some rain. After a morning for the group sightseeing in Avila (and a meeting for myself with the tourist board to sort out posters and maps for the competition events) we returned to Piedrahita, but with the cloud still at hill height and Read the rest of this entry »
