Probably too windy

July 31st, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

If we believe the Data from NOA then it is unlikely that we can safely fly today.  Winds in the SW with climbs to 3200 but with excessive wind speeds.  I we do fly then it will be early from Lastra and with a track to the NE as shown on the diagram and conditions/time/X […]

Good XC day. 3200m SW and Convergence

July 30th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

The high pressure over the Atlantic to our West continues to stabilise conditions.  A heat low beginning to form to South over the Peninsula.  Good quality themals with around 15km/hr at take off level, perhaps 30km/hr at top of convectgion layer.  Mainly blue thermals with likely blue convergence.  A good day for flgihts beyond Avila […]

SW and Bluie thermals to 3200m (Bills´big day)

July 29th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

The risk of storms have passed.  Todays SW winds around 20km at take off level with climbs of 3200m if temperature reaches 27ºC (which is should). I will do the airport run, retruning from Madrid at 5pm, so can be in Avila area around 6pm. Fly with trackers and I can retrieve you if you […]

An improvement, but..

July 28th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

The trough seems to have moved somewhat to the east.   High pressure begins to move in from the west which should fully stabalise things from Sunday onwards.  However, untill then we continue with the risk of large cloud build ups.  The cold front arriving should only affect adversley the northern part of Spain as is […]

Cbs

July 27th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

No chance today with very high probability.  Infact thunder as I write this at before 9am. Nice to have some rain on the ground after so long a dry spell – but no consilation for our pilots.  Anybody interested in a cultural trip to Salamanca? The trough and upper level cool air is just the […]

Not disimilar to yesterday

July 26th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Not the ideal paragliding scenario weather wise with the trough still nearby giving us to much upper level instablity and risk of large cloud build ups. The local forecast gives no risk of storms, howerver the Skew T with seems to hint otherwise.

c3800m base. S wind and Cbs

July 25th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

The heat low has further deepened and we now have an trough across us and a very high probability of isolated Cbs.  The winds are S most of the way through the convection layer so little vorticity and hence little chance of super cell development.  However, early Cu development to Congestus and probably Cbs in […]

WSW thermals to 3200m but increased instability(111.5km)

July 24th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Upper level wind very light and c15km/hr westerlies in the convective layer and likely convergence in the Ambles valley.  Cu development then rapid build up of congestus clouds once thermal trigger temperature is reach.  Not an ideal situation for stress free paragliding.  Limited XC potential if the forecast is correct as Cbs may build early […]

Light winds and blue thermals to c3000m

July 23rd, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

The temperatures should steadily rise over then next few days with the formation of a heat low over the Iberian Peninsula.  By Wednesday we may see some more instability in the upper levels.  Today very light winds and the dry adiabatic is well to the right.  Probably a late start but then good as the […]

Nigel bags another 3+ hrs

July 22nd, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Nigel has got his aritime up near 30 hrs in the last week. Today, while I was doing the airport run he did an attempt at a return from Barco, but the headwind stoped him near La Aldeauela. Nice evening flight for the new group (though a bit east)
