WSW and a bit breezy with poor climbs

Mid Afternoon

Later in afternoon

Section towards Segovia

The wind at PN is crossed along the hill at 8.30am, so probably it will come on.  Winds in West and going more North at the end of the day.  A strong inverstion near take off altitude rising only to around 2600m durng the day.  Some climbs to maybe 2800 later in the day, but stronger winds aloft will make it turbulent.  Expect once again strong winds in the Ambles Valley and compression at the Pass and strong downslope winds in the Vicinity of Villaotoro.

Local flying to the E of the big Spine is recommended unless this forcast is worse than reality.

What Happened.  An hour or so local flying early afternoon, then a big lifty evening flight.

Similar trend, but better thermal quality

Once again SW winds, improved thermal potential but tops lower at 3100m. Better themals may bring it onto PN, but once again a difficult day.

Section to Segovia/time

What Happened?

Brian, kevin and Gavin over the Pass to find lots of wind and not any decent climbs on thge other side.  Nigel and Rob at the cemetery and Graham near Villafranca.  Tony and I bombed nar my house and Carolyn near the Chalets after 40 mins of fighting the early weak conditions.  Wind picked up later stopping myself Tony and Carolyn from a reflight, but Gareth managed to get off on his second flight and get over the Pass.

SW winds. 3800m thermal tops

A very similar day to yesterday.  However, the air quality if far greater with visibility in the valley a lot better at this time yesterday.  Blue thermals to around 3800m.  Good prospects for another trip to Segovia.

Time /conditions to Segovia

High pressure and significantly less wind than we have been experiencing. The Wind at PN at 9am across the hill (not over the back as previous days), so it is almost sure to pull onto PN launch. High base in the plains after around 2pm with enough South in the winds not to give us too much problems to continue beyond Avila. Blue thermals to potentially around 3800m, though probably not untill the end of the afternoon.

What Happened?

A cracking day, though somewhat turbulent at launch and at top of lift. Only Rob and Carolyn bombed, the rest easily over the Pass. Tony first to Avila, though landing there, with Kevin on his new Mentor and Nigel further back.

Big climbs to near 4000m near Avila. Brian, Gavin, Graham, Stuart and myself taking a long route N to skirt airspace and get down below 3000m. An easy ride to near Segovia where we turned back to land in an easier spot for retrieve. PB for Stuart, Gavin and Graham. All first time over 100km. Best distance 113km.

time/conditions/down wind - towards Segovia

Poor visisbility and some cirrus may reduce the potential of the day.  However, it does at first seem we have flyable conditions with a good potential for a long XC.  Conditions shoul be good enough by 1.30pm and the wind is dropping off during the morning.  Wind SSW at PN at 8.30am.

Probable trip to Lastra c 11am

Less SW wind. Thermal tops 11000ft.

NE section

Feasable conditions for PG. High thermal tops after 2pm but still quite high winds at altitude and posibility of dispersed Cbs.

3 day forecast

Well, tomorrow is looking more feasable with winds of 15km/hr from the SW.  Today now looks far too windy to even contemplate an evening attempt.

Not a good day

noon

1500

Lastra to NE time /conditions

Thermal tops to 11500ft and decent thermal quality …but once again top end for wind at over 50km/hr at top of boundry layer.  Once again a day only for the brave, foolish and lucky – unless the forecast is wrong!

Increasing temperature. That African air again! Grrrr

Noon

18.00 if we get 36ºC

NE time and conditions track

The deep depression in the Atlantic will move N towards the UK but we will get further strong upper level S winds which will increase the temperature.  Better thermal qality than yesterday, with probably climbs to c3000m.  Top temp expected around 33ºC.  If it reaches 35ºC then we may see formation of Cu, posibly developing to Congestus level later in the afternoon.

Once again a difficult forecast for stress free paragliding.  A scenario we have seen a lot over the last 2 weeks.  In reality the forecast winds are too strong, though we can hope there is an error and have a look at Lastra.  Wind at PN at 9am is moderate S.

SW wind/2800m(PB 61km for John)

00.00

1500

Section /time/conditions to NE

The south west winds still tied to upper level strong SW linled to depressions in the Atlantic. Spome African air due to arrive increasing temperatures. Inversion at 2600m and with top temp around 28ºC climbs to above 2800m unlikely.

Wind may come on at PN (S at 8.30am) but we will be prepared to go a bit earlier to Lastra.

What  Happened?

Ok at Lastra, with only Carolyn landing infront.  Martin, Nigel, John, myself and Juaquin managed to get out of the N side of the Piedrahita Valley, but John leaving most of us for a 61km PB never going much over 2300m.

An evening flight at lastra only for Mark (he made it look a bit scary for the rest of us)

Tracks (Johns a bit broken but furthest)

Cold Front and Rain

Mmm, first frontal rain since May I think. Hopefully it will pass and later leave a lighter more northerly unstable airflow.

well, we did get some Evening flying after a trip to Salamanca and before the Big pieles.
