A good PG XC day. WNW blue thermals to 3000+. Chinny beyond Segovia!

August 27th, 2014 - Posted by Steve Ham

Marked absence of inversions today with a clear trace to over 3000m.  Winds much lighter, with a NW to W  direction.   A set for an easy flight to Avila and worth trying for beyond.  Thermal tops should rise to above 3500m.   What Happened. Aftger light but nice conditions things really got going by […]

More to NW but stronger

August 26th, 2014 - Posted by Steve Ham

A cold front brushing the N of the Peninsula today.  The wind strength is up on yesterday and also favourably the and is a bit more on the hill which with the stronger winds should give  us one of those spectacular evening flights like we had last week (take off from lower launch). For the […]

SW, Blue convergence but a bit more stable than recently

August 25th, 2014 - Posted by Steve Ham

High pressure over Azores and Russia with our heat low over spain.  Sunny conditions, though a  little more stable than recently with an inversion around 2600m and thermals likely to be quite sluggish till later in the afternoon.  Probable climbs to 3000m in the hotspots and convergence.  The stronger than recent SW may make it […]

An excellent PG XC day. 100km O&R for Chinny

August 23rd, 2014 - Posted by Steve Ham

Light winds from the west and good climbs to over 3000m.  Perfect for a nice flight to Avila and maybe beyond, or back (and maybe back over) the Pass.  Mainly blue thermals.  A great end to a very nice week, and for those Derbyshire pilots reading this and coming out tomorrow, it is looking very […]

Avila and back some

August 21st, 2014 - Posted by Steve Ham

Oncer again a high level WSW above the boundary layer.  Should be OK on the hill at PN.  Climbs to 3000m + later in the afternoon, though the cirrus could slow things down (not a bad thing really).  Once again flights to Avila and probable blocking by the N wind there. What Happened Classic day […]

More NW and a bit windier. Chiny to Avila

August 20th, 2014 - Posted by Steve Ham

Relative low pressure due to the heat low over the Peninsula, but in general good thermal  soaring conditions and the slightly more northern flow will make it less turbulent on the hill and give us a better evening flight.  Thermal conditions similar to yesterday but the wind being more N will probably keep us this […]

1 x 93km; 2 x 89k (PB for Dave); 2 x 69k plus 2 in Avila

August 19th, 2014 - Posted by Steve Ham

A cold front is passing through the north of Spain, but like the pattern which seems to have occurred all through last week, all the rain and storms should be limited to the N and the Pyrenees. Winds are SW but should come onto PN.  Blue convergence expected and a good day for flights beyond […]

4 over the Pass then the day deteriorated

August 18th, 2014 - Posted by Steve Ham

A heat low over the Peninsula and a cold front out to the N.  A SW flow which will give us the classic convergence and reduce the problems of getting stuck at Avila in a N wind.  Cloud base above 3500m though mainly blue thermals outside of the convergence. This is a potential 200km day, […]

Big Day!, another PB for Sondre with over 90km O&R, 80km circuit for Bernt and over Pass for Bart

August 14th, 2014 - Posted by Steve Ham

Not disimilar to yesterday with valley breezes probably to the W early on then more NE predominating later in the day.  Perhaps a chance of going over the pass to Avila and return with these conditions, or a similar task to yesterday, though I would favour Avila and back today if the wind stays light. […]

Pre Frontal, NW, Wave flying for some

August 12th, 2014 - Posted by Steve Ham

Bits of the cold front originated with Hurrican Bertha lingering across the north of the Peninsula and another to pass actually through our area tomorrow.  Mainly blue thermals to around 3000m and some hints of cirrus.  The north will make it difficult to go beyond Avila, but persistence as with Sondrey, may give some results. […]
