Weather for Sunday

July 3rd, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

This looks like a very good day for a circuit flight with light winds and the best conditions on the mountain and a tounge of convergence stretching to the NNE from the Pass.  It looks like there maybe some big build up of large Cu to the south of the mountain.  The risk of instability […]

Weather for Saturday July 2nd.

July 2nd, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Today we once again have excellent thermal XC conditions .  The task for yesterdays league probably should have been set with todays weather where we have a more N ad even NE flow from Avila.  Yesterday the N only really effected the lower level , the average in the boundary layer helping for a relatively […]

PB for Ian and Richard. 155km and 70km

July 1st, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Really nice soaring XC conditions yesterday and the classic run made by Ian.  We had intended to land at the Segovia goal the competition had set, but as Ian’s PB was a little beyond that (126km he did here last year to Tordesillas) he pushed on to finish the classic Piedrahita -Acrones flight.  7 hours […]

Weather Friday 1st July.

July 1st, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Yesterday was a remarkable soaring day.  Today will be similar. A NW flow with convergence lines on the mountain.  Surface winds relatively light and more N on the surface around Avila but the average wind in the boundary layer continues to be more WNW.  An inversion around 2400m, but likely climbs to above 3300m in […]

Weather 30th June

June 30th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Heat low continues with the main problems of instability much further from our flying zone.  Also winds lighter with good thermal quality giving us the prospect of a good XC day. An inversion around  2600m but we should be getting climbs by mid afternoon to around 3000m+  The wind is more to the NW today […]

Weather Wednesday June 29th.

June 29th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

We continue with the heat low and have a trough to our south with most of the Cb action there and to our East.  Our area has a reduced Cb problem and we should be ok today.  However, the winds are stronger which will make flying XC beyond Avila very difficult to day.  Any convergence […]

Weather Tuesday 28th June.

June 28th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Relative low pressure with most of the upper level instability to our South and East.  We should have a good soaring day with excellent XC potential however the build up of congestus and possible Cbs is greater than yesterday.  The more westerly flow will provide us with the classic convergence in the Avila valley, most […]

Weather Monday 27th

June 27th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

A SE flow at PN which should come onto the hill by late morning.  We expect convergence on the Plateau behind take off, and an easterly flow towards Barco. Not a brilliant day for open distance due to the swing of the winds further down towards Plasencia.   Climbs to c3000m by mid afternoon, with […]

Classic open distance SW convergence day

June 23rd, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Today we have the conditions which made Piedrahita famous as a big XC venue. With the SW flow we have a convergence running across the Avila vally then out to the NE across the flatlands. An inversion around 2700m will slow things, but we should get climbs to 300om+ metres again.  However, the big negative, […]
