Slightly better!

Section downwind

Lighter winds and improved thermal climbs to the inversion at around 2500- 2600m. A slow start although max temps 1ºC higher than yesterday at 24ºC. The NE wind does seem noticably less so we may have a better and longer day.

The wind over tha back at 9am. As yesterday, we will await it to come on – probably around 12.30pm.

What Happened?

Well, in the end we went to Chia, though if we had waited it did later come on to PN. Star of the day was Neil who managed to climb out and fly back into the Piedrahita Valley managing 23.6 km to La Horcajada.

Section PN to Tornavacas

High pressure to the West in the Atalantic and low pressure in the Mediterreanean giving us N to NE flow over the Peninsula. Very strong winds at costal areas but a reduction on yesterday for us. Still cool, though better than yesterday with top temp expected to around 23ºC. Inversion at around 2100m and at 2600m with climbs not much over the latter.

Once again a flight to Barco or maybe the Pass at Tornavacas is possible but winds may become a little strong by mid afternoon.

What Happened?

Some reasonable flying early on with a number of us escaping towards Barco but none further than Santa Maria de Los Caballeros.

Similar to yesterday, but cooler

section to Barco

We are still affected by the high pressure with cooler temperatures and marked inversions.  Once again thermal tops not much above take off height with a moderate NE wind.  Onc again a Goal in Barco is the only realistic option.

NE Light to Moderate and poor thermal climbs (to c7000ft)

Not disimilar to yesterday with another weatk cold front going throguh reducing temperatures (top estimated at 23ºC). Climbs to not much more than 2400m like yesterday with probable increasing of winds this afternoon. Once again a goal in Barco or maximum to Tornavacas.

What Happened?

The goal to Barco achieved by Chris (a new PB), James and Simon. The others strung out along the route. Pretty difficult with light climbs then increasing NE wind.

Weak cold front going through once again and lower level winds now in the NE.   Top temperatures not more than 26ºC and max thermal tops no more than 10.000ft, though we will probably go no higher than 2700m. Early morning inversion at around 2000ft (just above PN take off).   A flight to Barco should be easy.  A flight to the Tornavacas Pass OK too, but the Cherry Tree valley will be tricky if  the base does not go to 10.000ft.

What Happened?

A trip to Barco for me with the rest strung out along the route.  V.weak, but increasing winds may now stop our evening flight.  Good Flight for Steve who led the way to near the Petrol Station on way to Barco.

10,700ft, SW/NW c 15-20km/hr

Post cold frontal with some Cu development which will diminish late afternoon as humidity drops. Good XC potential for a flight to Avila and perhaps Segovia. Wind at PN at 8am is nil (thats good!)

What Happened.

A couple of hours of very nice thermal soaring but increasing cirrus made the Pass crossing difficult (we mostly bombedthere). A special mention in dispatches for Alan who once again led the way ……………though today to the ground near the Pass rather than over it.

Our wind at PN is crossed at 9am so is very likely to come on the hill. Lower level winds are reasonabe, but stronger winds likely as thermals mix down upper level winds. Blue thermal tops at 11.000ft with max temp of 28ºC. With temp at 30ºC some possible isolated congestus build up. Approach of another cold front tonight thrown from the depression over the UK.

What Happened?

I went about an hour earlier than the group and had a hard time staying up.  Afte it got good most had a relativeluy easy ride to near 2600m.  A relatively easy Pass crossing, and Simon, Alan,Rob, James, jon and myself doing so.  Not much on the other side, with banks of cirrostratus blocking sunshine occationally.  Only Simon and myself pulled a climb from near Blacha.  We made Avila for a PB for Simon.  Chris also had a more modest PB to the Cemetery after a good run on his new Rise.

Good blue thermals to 3800m, but SW wind a bit high

The depression over the UK is throwing us high level SW, a pattern similar to most of the summer. Tghe cold fronts should onky effect the north of hte country. An inversion at 2600m, but very good thermal quality with blue thermals to 3800m.

High XC potential for the day but the wind is S and may not come onto PN and is on the extreme top end for comfortable/enjoyable paragliding.

Derbyshire SC week 1. Fine and sunny

12.00

18.00

Still quite cool after yesterdays cold front. A marked inversion aroiund 2600m and light W winds in Valley. Should be good conditions for first evening flight. We will go up a little earlier than normal as things are lighter than they have been.

3 day forecast

20120826-234946.jpg

Post cold frontal

The front associated with the depression over the UK has passed leaving cooler temperatures and initiallly lower base. The Stratocumulus should clear the hill before mid day leaving us with a decent day with c15 -20km/hr NW winds. Base rising to around 9000ft by the end of day. should give us nice soaring and a potential to fly to Avila, though due to N component, little more.
