Weather 30th June

Heat low continues with the main problems of instability much further from our flying zone.  Also winds lighter with good thermal quality giving us the prospect of a good XC day.

An inversion around  2600m but we should be getting climbs by mid afternoon to around 3000m+  The wind is more to the NW today in our sector with a definite move low down near Avila to a more N flow (which did not happen yesterday in the end).  Convergence along the Paramera range and the usual lines of convergence across the  Avila valley due to the N flow.  The best sector for tasking will be the Ambles Valley and E side of the Corneja Valley.

Probably for a day with plenty of pilots in goal a task to near Avila then Tps in the Avila valley finishing off back towards the Pass.   For a more ambitious  task,  with few in goal, then the return to the Corneja Valley and Goal in Piedrahita.  Likewise, if you are not worried about having just a few pilots in goal, then you can try to push towards Segovia/Arcones, but these are certainly not the classic conditions for that.Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 08.12.06 Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 08.12.30 Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 08.26.34 Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 08.23.13 Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 08.16.07 Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 08.13.50 Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 08.18.14 Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 08.24.08 Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 08.20.12

170km goal for some

Yesterdays conditions were going to always be rough and problematic so, having seen the big build ups and rain in the Avila valley we mostly flew in the Piedrahita valley locally.  The competition however had a successful. day keeping well north to avoid conditions in Ambles , which in fact turned good by 3pm.  4 arrived at the 170km goal.

For a task I would suggest nothing more complex than a straight race to the south of Avila City.

2 X 100km PBs yesterday

an excellent day with great conditions and an a number of excellent flights topped by Mike and Stu, both for their first time over 100km.13495200_10154895932999045_6240297951899410881_n

Weather Tuesday 28th June.

Relative low pressure with most of the upper level instability to our South and East.  We should have a good soaring day with excellent XC potential however the build up of congestus and possible Cbs is greater than yesterday.  The more westerly flow will provide us with the classic convergence in the Avila valley, most likely along the hills to the north.  However, beyond Avila is where the highest likelihood of storms is.  Thermal quality is good  Valley trigger temp around 28ºC and valley thermal cloud base at 3000m.

For tasking either stay in the Corneja valley or a very early quick flight to a Goal to Avila to ensure the task is not invalidated due to rain or Cbs on track.Screen Shot 2016-06-28 at 08.07.03

Weather Monday 27th

A SE flow at PN which should come onto the hill by late morning.  We expect convergence on the Plateau behind take off, and an easterly flow towards Barco.

Not a brilliant day for open distance due to the swing of the winds further down towards Plasencia.   Climbs to c3000m by mid afternoon, with probable higher climbs in the convergence behind launch toward Gredos.

Probable best tasking area is the Corneja Valley towards Pass, Villnueva de Campillo and towards Barco.  If the day is  working early and Cu is seen at a decent height by 12.30 over the Plateau, then we could consider fly towards the villages over the back towards Gredos, but then returning, NOT crossing over. Screen Shot 2016-06-27 at 08.24.51

Saturdays weather. NE Flow and a trip to Barco

Very nice soaring conditions and the milk run flight to Barco.  Base around 2700m when we landed.  Looking good for the evening flight.  All in , we flew every day this week, made 6 personal bests and a few 100km flights.

Next week looking nice!

Classic open distance SW convergence day

Today we have the conditions which made Piedrahita famous as a big XC venue. With the SW flow we have a convergence running across the Avila vally then out to the NE across the flatlands.

An inversion around 2700m will slow things, but we should get climbs to 300om+ metres again.  However, the big negative, (or positive if you are a long distance crazed maniac) is the wind strength.  The forecast winds are on the limit in my opinion.  We will have to make the decision at the site.  Winds will be ferocious later in the day at Lastra   and may be cross on at Peña Negra by 1pm in the lee of the wind.  This is common and we do fly regularly from Peña Negra in these conditions.  However, dust devils are common at launch, an it can be a turbulent ride until you find the first climb out on the spines.

We are likely to get going early to Lastra to check it there first .  Same plan as yesterday really.

Another PB for Pete with 100km +

A similar day to yesterday for  the conditions with the whole gang getting out of La lastra.  Most made around 30 to 40 but after this distance the conditions really picked up with climbs to around 3600m and a convergence running N to beyond the horizon.

Another probably excellent day for XC

Not disimilar to yesterday in many respects.  We may go to La Lastra, the other S site, which is a little easier to get away from.  A similar convergence effect to the North is expected once again.  So another long day!
