SW post cold frontal. 3000m+ and convergence

July 28th, 2013 - Posted by Steve Ham

The wind at PN is starting to come on around 10am and does not look strong.  The forecast winds are on the high side, but should be within safe limits early on.  A good XC day for flying towards Segovia.  Expect convergence and some build up of congestus along that, especially in the Ambles valley. […]

Cold Front going through

July 27th, 2013 - Posted by Steve Ham

Not brilliant for flying.  SW wind and some rain, though maybe at the end of the day the wind will veer to NW so we can fly at PN at the end of the day. It was tricky for Frank, Cary and Sophia to get to Avila 60 years ago as well.  A titanic struggle…..a […]

71.4 for Karsten

July 26th, 2013 - Posted by Steve Ham

A weak cold front will go through today bringing  a little more instability.  The winds once again from the SW and probably too strong for decent safe paragliding.  Cloud likely to form around 3100m  and perhaps congestus in the convergence. Another more active cold front tomorrow, the winds going more NW for more typical  and […]

Windy SW and a bit stable

July 25th, 2013 - Posted by Steve Ham

This is not going to be an easy day to get decent flying if we look at the tables above. A heat wave approaches from the SE, though largely leaves us to its west.  There is an approaching cold front which will skim the N of the peninsula and should give more instability tomorrow. […]

Classic Open XC day. Blue convergence 3800m thermal tops

July 24th, 2013 - Posted by Steve Ham

Lighter winds today and likely to come onto  Peña Negra. Less S in the wind and convergence along the Avila valley and beyond very likely.  A little cooler and not likely to get very good till around 2pm. Typical conditions for flights to Segovia and beyond. We must decide on an early start at lastra […]

SW 20km/hr+ 3000m. Windy, but a nice evening short XC

July 23rd, 2013 - Posted by Steve Ham

We are still affected by the heat low formed some weeks back.  An upper level trough to our NE where the instability remains, though in our area we should not have problems with large Cu development.  The skew T shows blue thermals to over 3000m. The problem once again are the relatively high winds […]

SW 3000m +. 50km + from Lastra

July 22nd, 2013 - Posted by Steve Ham

The upper level trough we had over us yesterday has moved northwards which should give us a better day.  Winds around 20km/hr from the SW so we will go directly to Lastra quite early c10.30. A more northern track should keep us clear of any larger build ups which will tend to be in the […]

4000m+ SW. 72km for Dave

July 20th, 2013 - Posted by Steve Ham

Not disimilar to yesterday so we will have the same issues with the take off.  Once again very high potential for a long XC, but those relatively high winds will make it a bit problematic at launch later on. What Happened Surprising light winds at Lastra, with hinds of N and W.  Good climbs […]

High Potential. 4000m, mainly blue thermals. SW

July 18th, 2013 - Posted by Steve Ham

This is looking like an epic open distance day.  We will go to Lastra both to avoid the HGs and the backwinds.  Very high thermal tops to over 4000m What Happened Mmm, well we went to Lastra but it got out of hand (windy) quick.  We scuttled of to Candelario, where it also looked […]
