Weather for flying July 5th.

Initially, looking at the sky this morning it seems much better.  The wind at take off is zero so should be fine at PN. No need to go to La Lastra.

However, although not in the most fierce area of storms today, we do have sufficient upper level instability to cause large congestus clouds and rain later in the afternoon with some Cbs in certain areas.

The general wind is in the west, with a base not too high, some 2800m.  A day for going early and navigating more to the north to keep out of the Avila Valley when clouds get big.

Some local flying.

Yesterday, despite the terrible forecast we were able to do a short local flight during the morning around 11.30am and a reasonable evening flight.

Weather Monday

The next few days are looking very problematic for safe paragliding with high CAPE values which will trigger large Cbs along our favourite convergence routes.

Conversely to what we often do we will have to look to fly in areas of the poorest thermals with an eye to the sky at all times.

80km Out and Return for Stu

whilst I was collecting from the airport, Stu, Ian, Fredi and Arvid had some great flying, Stu getting over the Pass and making a return from 40km.  Fredi and Ian battled against the headwind to Avila , with Fredi making it back to near the Pass.  Cb development late in day but we were able to do a late evening flight as well.

Weather for Sunday

This looks like a very good day for a circuit flight with light winds and the best conditions on the mountain and a tounge of convergence stretching to the NNE from the Pass.  It looks like there maybe some big build up of large Cu to the south of the mountain.  The risk of instability will move to our side tomorrow.  However, light winds will us allow some cautious flying and maybe XC.

End of successful Liga Centro. 800km + and 7 tasks.

A great week for our guests with multiple 100km + flights and also of course  for the Spanish league with big tasks every day for the 7 days.  Yesterday capped off the week with a valley circuit ranging between Villatro Pass, Barco, Tortoles and Puente de congest and N along the Salamanca road.  light winds and abundant lift in the valley.  Just perfect!

Weather for Saturday July 2nd.

Today we once again have excellent thermal XC conditions .  The task for yesterdays league probably should have been set with todays weather where we have a more N ad even NE flow from Avila.  Yesterday the N only really effected the lower level , the average in the boundary layer helping for a relatively quick flight beyond Segovia.

Thermal conditions very good around the Pass and the Ambles valley,  Probably convergence lines in Ambes and best conditions perhaps on the Paramera range

Climbs to around 3000m m later in the day and to maybe 3500m on the hills.  Trigger temperature for decent climbs above 2500m at around 30 ºC, so likely a late start once again.  Cu likely especially in the Avila valley and southern mountains.

Best task for day in general terms is an out and return towards Avila.

170km for Fredi. A classic day

The forecast turned out to be spot on yesterday and the proposed goal would have been nice for the competition.  Fredi flew beyond Arcones using the ridge of finish off just after the Somosierra Gap.  Only Mike and Dave made it over the pass from our group, though the rest had a good evening flight later with climbs to 3000m.

PB for Ian and Richard. 155km and 70km

Really nice soaring XC conditions yesterday and the classic run made by Ian.  We had intended to land at the Segovia goal the competition had set, but as Ian’s PB was a little beyond that (126km he did here last year to Tordesillas) he pushed on to finish the classic Piedrahita -Acrones flight.  7 hours plus flying.  Excellent flight also for Dave near Avila, Mike past Avila, Richard at 70km (PB) and Stu at 88km, 13590307_10207280209307437_2383142589783245499_n

Weather Friday 1st July.

Yesterday was a remarkable soaring day.  Today will be similar.

A NW flow with convergence lines on the mountain.  Surface winds relatively light and more N on the surface around Avila but the average wind in the boundary layer continues to be more WNW.  An inversion around 2400m, but likely climbs to above 3300m in the late afternoon.  Cu development similar to yesterday.

For a task I would suggest ARCONES landing field.  155km.  A  return to Piedrahta from Avila would also be possible..more so than yesterday.  Or a return to the E side of the Pass very easy. Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 08.23.30 Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 08.25.04 Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 08.22.25 Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 08.21.11 Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 08.25.41 Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 08.24.22 Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 08.26.24
