Plenty over the Pass but into strong conditions.

Yesterday saw pleasant but light conditions in the Piedrahita Valley, but on crossing into the Avila valley we had 30km winds on the ground and beyond Muñana the thermal strength and turbulence were most uncomfortable so most of us chose to land.   Joe soldiered on to around 75km for the best distance of the day.

Weather:11th of July

Today we have a cold front to our  West, straddling the Portuguese border around mid day.  Winds are going to be on the high side and we have a strong valley inversion early in the morning so the thermic  day may start a little late.  However , later in the day there may be clouds in the mountains reaching 4000m, though around 3500m is more likely in the flats.  A potentially good day for Open XC, however the N component makes it an unlikely 200km day.

There is a certain amount of conflict  in the wind strength reports.  Some look fine and some I would consider blown out.  We will not know really until we observe from take off and later from the air.  The more northerly aspect over the next few days will ensure very good quality evening flying for those who are less focused on distances.

Joe´s new PB of 160km.

Joe was out with us in the first week of the season doubling his PB.  He returned yesterday and whilst we were doing the airport pick up made a massive 160km new PB.  Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 08.23.40

Bart the Victorious. 90.47km PB. Saturday 9th July

Saturday gave us great flying conditions to finish the week with generally light climbs and light wind to a base around 3200m with good Cumulus.  We took a more NNE rout after the Pass following the predicted convergence in that direction.  The Daves and Stuart also had good flights around the 50km mark, but it was Bart who we had left behind earlier who recovered and flew on to his new PB of 90.47km on his Mentor 3.Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 08.16.45

W flow . 3000m+ thermal tops

A very excellent XC day with light winds and good quality climbs.  There is likely to be a line of convergence swinging NE after the Pass where we may find a decent tailwind later in the flight.

Trigger temperature is quite high (c27ºC) so unlikely to be good early on.

We will not go up the hill until 11.30, with briefing around 11.10. Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 09.11.25 Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 09.18.10 Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 09.13.03 Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 09.14.34 Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 09.12.35 Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 09.12.00 Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 09.13.37 Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 09.14.03

Flights to the West

A return of excellent XC conditions yesterday with a nice Cu filled sky and light winds.  Flights towards the Jerte Valley with max distance around 70km+

Weather for July 8th Friday. Looking good!

A return of more favourable XC weather.  A northerly flow in general  with more East toads cloud base.  Cloud base above 3000m  and Cu formation likely but without large build ups in most areas, though more likely on higher mountains to the south.  A day for out and return to Avila or to Tornavacas Pass.  A headwind in the Jerte (cherry tree) Valley would make it not a good idea to continue that way, and a more pronounced headwind after Avila make Avila or before a good turning point.  convergence likely in Ambles and on Gredos mountains.   Should be good for evening flight with this direction of wind.  Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 09.37.47 Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 09.37.08 Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 09.38.03 Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 09.36.07 Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 09.39.08 Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 09.38.49 Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 09.38.30 Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 09.36.39

Weather today looks especially unlikely for safe flying

Without the need to go into too much detail, much of Spain, and particularly the central part, will be subject to severe storms once again.  I think it unlikely we can even squeeze in a safe top to bottom.  However, this does seem to be coming to and end and more hope for Friday!

Weather for Wednesday July 6th.

Continuing very unstable with cooler air comming in at altitude making today very things very problematic.   Wind at 6am is south at PN launch.  This could be a difficult day even to get the limited amount of flying we had yesterday. We will leave at 10.30  and maybe have to go to La Lastra if there are no signs of it coming onto PN.Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 07.56.23 Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 07.59.54 Screen Shot 2016-07-05 at 08.27.16 Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 07.57.38 Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 07.56.58

Some Local flying and one over the Pass before storms

Yesterday we were able to get some reasonable flying in for an hour before the  large build up clouds and storms.  Only Fredi ventured over the Pass to a very active Ambles Valley landing around the bend in the road.
