SSW wind and rain

Maybe some small hope if the rain clears to fly at Lastra.

Strong SW wind and rain

Oh dear…….!

First live testing of live trackers

Yesterday we had some good flying. Four flights each for most of the group. I even managed a quick flight to test conditions on the first flight when it still looked a little windy. Post cold front conditions with hoar frost at launch and a wind chill factor well below zero. We all landed after the first flight with very painfull hands. However, things improved, the wind dropping and the sun warming things up.
We were able to make the first real test of the new tracking software developed by Paul Russell for keeping track of our pilots from the retrieve vehicle with a tablet and from a smart phone. A few bugs, which Paul picked up on from watching in the UK. All in all though it worked well and promises to be a great asset.

Things are looking impossilbe for lying today with another cold front and the influence of the deep depression centred over the N of the Bay of Biscay. Maybe another sightseeing tour today!

Some improvement in the weather

After the passage of two cold fronts we now continue with the cold NW flow though we should have flyable conditions at Peña Negra today. However winds at the coastal regions of NW Spain are already strong with the approach of further unsettled weather. A Cu filed sky expected with winds of around 20km with base around 2300m. Flights over the Pass will be difficult with these condtions but we should get reasonable flying in valley and main ridge.

Paraventure.

Paul Williams with a group from his school in SE Wales returns to piedrahita. Paul was last here in 1998!

Weather for today. Cool airflow from NW with moderate winds and base limited to 2300m. Weak passage of a cold front with sky opening a little later. However the NW may limit our flying mid afternoon due to its strength (25-30km).
For today we are limited to local soaring, the ridge run should be easy, but care should be taken in the valley towards the pass due to stronger winds.

A short flight before the return of poor flying weather

Yesterday Paul and I did an hours flight along the valley landing near the Long Bar (el Lavadero) as the W wind started to get up. A good looking sky with nice Cu nad some powerfull climbs.
Paul has been working almost non stop on the new tracking/guiding software over the last weeks during the poor weather. With a smartphone from the air we (I) can now see easily the positions, altitude and speed of all our pilots. The retrieve driver will have similar information displayed on a tab in the vehicle. The tests so far have been very good. We are looking forward to having some good XC conditions and larger groups to see how it really works. So far, with the poor weather it has been tested by driving, running around and small flights with the trackers.

Decent flying at last

Today may give us a chance to fly to Avila with blue thermals to around 2500m and maybe small Cu at around 3000m if the temp goes a little higher in the hot spots.
Yesterday a very peasant flying day, though our clients were at the airport after a week of suffering very poor weather. When I got back from the airport we went up with the locals and both Paul, Puri and myself had somne good local thermal flying. I had a go on the Ozone Delta which I have in as a demo. However, with my new lightweight gear I now seem to be rather light for the Medium size and also my S Mentor.

A slight improvement in the weather

A very disapointing week so far for our guests. Today and tomorrow offer some hope. Later today the wind should moderate and be OK or Peña Negra. However, probable 8/8 cover of stratocumulus near take off level, ad probable stratus (and maybe Nimbostratus above).
Sunday looking Ok or thermal flying, but most need to go to the airport. A sad and sorry Easter for Paragliding.

Hopeless weather

Low pressure and trough centred over us. Winds are fine, but the long awaited rain is consistent.

Rain stops play after first flight

Nice to start with but rapid overdevelopment after midday.
