Yet another Epic day

August 29th, 2009 - Posted by Steve Ham

Plenty of PBs for altitude today with a cloud base of 3800m.  I flew tandem with John, an old client, now 70 and no longer flying who was in the area on holiday with his wife.  We managed cloud base, but I landed locally, needing to get back to prepare the registraton for the XC […]

Perhaps one of my favourite flights.

August 28th, 2009 - Posted by Steve Ham

A truly wonderful day with a cloud base of around 3800m and a marked convergence over the high ground. As it was blue in the Corneja (Piedrahita) valley, we decided to go over the back to catch the convergence. Paul, Simon, Nigel, John, Bryan and Carolyn all managed to climb up in the convergence over […]

6 over the pass. Great conditions

August 26th, 2009 - Posted by Steve Ham

Light NW winds and good climbs to 3200m today.  Even the first fligth at 11am was good enough to stay up. Brian, Gavin, Carolyn, Tony, Nigel and myself crossed the pass.  On the other side it was N to NE below 2600m so was slow going.  We had to take a line along the river, […]

Fantastic conditions.

August 25th, 2009 - Posted by Steve Ham

Sunday and Monday were a loss, but for an evening flight yesterday.  Today, Tuesday, gave us epic soaring conditions with a typically post cold frontal start (overcast and cloud on the hill).  Fantastic climbs and nicely spread Cus though not so high.  Myself, Brian and Gavin went to the pass, then headed north to Tortoles […]

Epic saturday conditions

August 22nd, 2009 - Posted by Steve Ham

A fantastic day with Cus at around 3900m and the classic convergence cloud street.  Martin was first off and hooked straight into a great climb with Kieth.  I flew tandem with Robert and spent around 40 minutes surviving at the bottom of the Big Spine in scratchy lift.   After eventually getting up we went towards […]

Friday, Perfect XC conditions

August 22nd, 2009 - Posted by Steve Ham

Nice light winds from the NW with climbs to 3200 but with few Cus.  Very pleasant themic conditions, much smoother than previous days and a real joy to fly.   I flew tandem with Julian, and we crossed the pass with an easy route to Avila.  (many other free fliers reached Avila).  Unfortunately our group bombed […]

Return of good evening conditions at PN

August 20th, 2009 - Posted by Steve Ham

Today the wind came on the hill while we were away doing small stuff on a small hill at La Garganta de Villar.  When we arrived at PN around 2pm there had been an accident by a spanish pilots, so with the helicopter etc we did not fly.  However, the evening flight was very very […]

Big Conditons. S-SW

August 19th, 2009 - Posted by Steve Ham

A light wind forecast and it looked as though it would come on Peña Negra….however, at 12.30 gliders started comming over from Lastra high, so by 1pm, with the wind still not consistently on the hill, we went ourselves to Lastra. As expected, pretty strong there.  I took off and was hoofed up some 400m […]

OD Cbs

August 16th, 2009 - Posted by Steve Ham

Saturday was a day of storms, though things sorted themselves out for the evening, but we missed the very short window of wind on the hill.  The last day of the Basque/Andalucian hang gliding league tomorrow, so good luck to them.  It is not often we see so many hang gliders rigged at launch these […]

Epic 60km out and return for Nigel.

August 14th, 2009 - Posted by Steve Ham

A fantastic day, with a climb out to 3500m direct after take off for some.  Nigel and myself led to the Tornavacas pass, Nigel taking the same route home, myself bombing on trying to cross the valley to the N. Michael landed up short of the Tornavacas pass, as did Catherine after around 28km.  Liz […]
