A tricky day, but maybe something early on.

August 12th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

UPDATE 10.12am. The wind has now  gone S south at PN.  We can have a quick look at the S site, but due to the forecast I think this is not worth it.  I would suggest a trip to Salamanca. Low pressure and frontal systems moving through with winds to the W and SW which […]

3000m+, WSW strongish. Classic Convergence Day

August 11th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Something of an all or nothing day.  If the wind is suitable for take off we should be able to go a long long way.  With the  SW wind it may come onto PN but that may be very crossed and with dust devils so we will go early to the S site.  Today the […]

4000m and West. High Potential XC day.

August 10th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Potentially a very good xc day with good thermal quality and maybe climbs to 4000m and for sure over 3000m.  An occluded front to our south moving away eastwards.  There is likely to be some build up of cu and we must keep an eye on them, though the largest formations will occur  in the […]

A Difficult day

August 2nd, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Today the principal problem will be the take off.  The wind is expected to be 15 knots at around 2000m at 3pm.  If you look at the surface winds the convergence area in blue at 2pm is well to the north of our valley as the  south west winds have displaced it northwards.  There might […]

3100m, light winds.

August 1st, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

XC soar seem to indicate SW winds, but the Hirlam, which I tend to favour now shows more of a NE flow. with convergences along the mountain towards Barco and Bejar.  A nice inversion at 3100m which should cap any vertical development and cloud formation.  Likely early clouds at a low level due to moisture […]

Not suitable for PG. Maybe late in day

July 31st, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Moderate SW wind and a strong convergence along the mountains.  Strong chance of Cbs.  A mild chance of a decent flight late this evening. Tomorrow is looking good….also after that. A day trip to Salamanca for those interested?

Potentially a good XC day. Some complications. 110km for Thomas.

July 30th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Westlies, not too strong and base over 3000m.  However, the general situation begins to become more complex and unstable.  Likely build up of congestus and possible Cbs at the end of day especially in the convergence.   The Hirlam surface winds show an interesting convergence on the E side of the pass at 11am.  convergence […]

Another Avila/Segovia day.

July 29th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

(Tin Tin.  I will be around just before 10am when the shop opens.  I need to buy a large bodkin at the sewing shop to make the line loop.) A reasonable day with a bit more wind than yesterday, once again, a little too farf to the north to make a good open XC day, […]

Chipper Tuesday. Not bad, NW with climbs to near 3000m

July 28th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

A reasonable day starting out light but the wind getting up from the NW later in the day.  Probable day for Avila, maybe more. There may be a bit more N in the Avila valley than we would like, so slow progress.  A good day to come a way back from Avila.  Inversion at 2600 […]

NW winds, a bit strong and low, but OK for Avila.

July 27th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

A weak cold front going through to day.  the winds generally in the NW with convergence to the south.  It’ll get windy around Avila so no going beyond there.  It is also inverted just above take off till daly on with conditions not really developing well to late afternoon.  A flight of 60km is on, […]
