Another NOT brilliant XC day.

July 13th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Today once again we have strong inversions and little probability of climbs over 2400m.  Also we will have increased winds strength from the NE by early afternoon.  This is a quite typical scenario with cool NE airflow and a reasonable stable airmass.  It can be unusual in that the winds at take off on the […]

Poor climbs but at least we are in the low wind sector.

July 12th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Today we have strong winds West of the Bejar range and to the East side of the Avila Valley.   There is a very persistent inversion at around 1800m, and with lower top temperatures we will find it difficult to get above 2500m in the valley climbs.  Our Valley and Down to Barco is the […]

Weather:11th of July

July 11th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Today we have a cold front to our  West, straddling the Portuguese border around mid day.  Winds are going to be on the high side and we have a strong valley inversion early in the morning so the thermic  day may start a little late.  However , later in the day there may be clouds […]

W flow . 3000m+ thermal tops

July 9th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

A very excellent XC day with light winds and good quality climbs.  There is likely to be a line of convergence swinging NE after the Pass where we may find a decent tailwind later in the flight. Trigger temperature is quite high (c27ºC) so unlikely to be good early on. We will not go up […]

Weather for July 8th Friday. Looking good!

July 8th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

A return of more favourable XC weather.  A northerly flow in general  with more East toads cloud base.  Cloud base above 3000m  and Cu formation likely but without large build ups in most areas, though more likely on higher mountains to the south.  A day for out and return to Avila or to Tornavacas Pass. […]

Weather today looks especially unlikely for safe flying

July 7th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Without the need to go into too much detail, much of Spain, and particularly the central part, will be subject to severe storms once again.  I think it unlikely we can even squeeze in a safe top to bottom.  However, this does seem to be coming to and end and more hope for Friday!

Weather for Wednesday July 6th.

July 6th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Continuing very unstable with cooler air comming in at altitude making today very things very problematic.   Wind at 6am is south at PN launch.  This could be a difficult day even to get the limited amount of flying we had yesterday. We will leave at 10.30  and maybe have to go to La Lastra […]

Weather for flying July 5th.

July 5th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Initially, looking at the sky this morning it seems much better.  The wind at take off is zero so should be fine at PN. No need to go to La Lastra. However, although not in the most fierce area of storms today, we do have sufficient upper level instability to cause large congestus clouds and […]

Weather Monday

July 4th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

The next few days are looking very problematic for safe paragliding with high CAPE values which will trigger large Cbs along our favourite convergence routes. Conversely to what we often do we will have to look to fly in areas of the poorest thermals with an eye to the sky at all times.

80km Out and Return for Stu

July 4th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

whilst I was collecting from the airport, Stu, Ian, Fredi and Arvid had some great flying, Stu getting over the Pass and making a return from 40km.  Fredi and Ian battled against the headwind to Avila , with Fredi making it back to near the Pass.  Cb development late in day but we were able […]
