Tricky weather day

With a trough sitting over us we have some unstable conditions  and variable winds, though mainly to the SW and on the strong side at times.  Certainly not the best forecast due to potential vertical development of the Cu and some rain showers perhaps.  Wind at take off early this morning now at 32km/hr….not normal for a good day.  We can see how it develops by mid morning and perhaps do something non flying before trying it this evening!

46km O&R for Richard

The wind came onto PN consistently for only a short time yesterday and we had some large Cu build ups to the NE of the valley.  Of those who flew, Richard did very well with a great circuit flight to the NW as far as Armenteros and then back.  Screen Shot 2016-08-26 at 08.44.05

3500m + day again

Wind patterns and convergence lines not dissimilar to previous days, though perhaps greater possibility of build up of large clouds and maybe more chance of wind on at PN.  More detail at briefing.

3600m and potential to 200km+

Well, that was yesterday. Only 2 of our pilots took off; Joe and Richard.  Who unfortunately did not get to the good section where I waited at 3600m just N or Piedrahita.  An amazing cloud street following the convergence predicted by rasp   was ahead, but I landed near home and we had some great evening soaring at Lastra later.   First flight for Phil after a few years lay off .

Good Open XC potential

Today we have similar conditions to yesterday, but ramped up in wind and strength and cloud.  The wind strength will likely force us to use La Lastra as it is less likely to come onto PN.  Very marked convergence lines to the north like yesterday.  Likely congestus clouds forming late in the day with some isolated Cbs perhaps.

PB for Richard. Excellent day for all.

Fantastic conditions with perfect Cu around 3300m.  Most went from PN towards the Pass then moving N towards Salamanca, Richard to its East for a PB of 62.5km and Hugh to West for a similar distance.  Both Joe and Dave tried to make it back, Dave making around 100km.  I flew with Alan on the tandem, landing short of Alba.Joe Rik DAve

Convergence to NNE

Not disimilar to yesterday but with stronger conditions and a higher base.  an interesting convergence line running to the NNE after the Pass, but more defined than yesterday.   Once again we would like very much for it to come onto PN.  Higher climbs, and will be easier to go beyond 3000m earlier in the day reaching maybe 3400m+ later on.

Excellent 1st Day for DSC

Really pleasant conditions yesterday for the new group who mainly kept to the valley.  Dave Allen did the best with an out and return of around 50kms to beyond the N of the Pass.

Really spectacular evening flying.  Light winds but with thermals to 3100m.

Light winds, 3000m potential.

Winds are generally light starting in the SE.  Some convergence to the north of the valley swinging up towards Peñaranda and  beyond.  Good quality climbs with some inversion below below 3000m early in the day , but later just one at around 2950m.  Generally, a good thermal soaring day.

Our key decision will be which take off to use. Possibly first la Lastra then later PN, however, I rather hope it will be onto PN by  11.30.

Sunday 21st.

A memorable day as the van broke down on the way to the airport.  However, all good with new hire van.  Evening flight for the new Derbyshire/Dales group with a smoothish N wind.
