Nordic Viking 2017

Brett Janaway asked me yesterday to do the design for this years event.  Last years viking figures were a success, so he just wanted something similar with the same characters.  I did this, adding the Nordic hand drawn text and a frightened Slovenian escaping in his type of boat.

Not long now until our flying season gets underway so little time to do these projects now.  I have the French Hang Gliding Nationals design to do, finish the PWC Australia, and a few Sky Junkies.  Luckily I have already done the next 3 back page illustrations for XC magazine.  Once our season starts in June with our normal 12 hour working days, then there is no time for this stuff!

I was asked to do an event poster for their annual pilot concentration in the Canary Islands.  I went with a spiral climb with figures in the local costume.

The last XC magazine, apart from my usual Sky Junkie Illustration on the back page also had a review by me of the Skywalk Chilli 4.  I did a few illustrations, in a pen and ink style with a limited palette watercolour wash., a bit influences by T. Sullivant

White Nights Cup

This little assignment was something of a pain.  I tried initially with a symbolic St Petersburg sky in a sort of Soviet style image.  Then tried an image around what I thought was an emblematic tower of a church.  They liked that, but wanted a different church.  Bored with the flat graphic stuff I tried a 3D representation in 5 point perspective, but no, they preferred the other.  I changed that, then they wanted adjustment in positions and landmarks.  A very long drawn out process for a T shirt image I don’t much like.  In future I will stay away from Screen printed shirts with minimal flat colours.

I already made a web banner for the Aerothon event in Baja California.  Here is another for their Peru event.  Plenty of Peruvian stuff, clothes, hats, llamas etc, as well as the obligatory bike and paraglider.

The North South Cup is now the only event I regularly attend. It is a friendly event between the South and North of Britain. As I am from Bristol, I am in the Southern Team.  This year just one flight from Llagollen across towards south Wales and Abergaveny.

I made a poster design which was printed by XC magazine and given to the pilots as souvenirs.  I have been going more for line drawing lately for T shirt designs for clarity.  This one is in  a Pen and Ink style with watercolour washes a little in the style of one of my cartoonist heroes H,M Bateman.

Just before my UK holiday last week I was asked to do a design for the championship.  Something very british.  After the usual dozen or so thumbnail idea sketches I came upon the idea of Boris Johnson and Teresa May in a King Kong like scene at Big Ben. Here are a few sketches of the process.

Naviter is a flight instrument company, GPS, Vario etc.  I tried to show a bit of navigational stuff in the design.  The perspective idea is robbed a little from my Tin Tin design for the Belgians I did at the end of last year.

The event is in Macedonia and  a sister event to the Gin Wide Open

The Gin Wide Open is in Macedonia this year.  The place of the next worlds.  I was contacted to design a t shirt illustration by Toby and Brett who run the event and for whom I did last years design.  I don’t know Macedonia, so just went for what I though a fun event should represent.  This whimsical design is perhaps influenced by my love of the great British illustrator W. Heath Robinson.   Here are a few of the planning drawings before I reached the coloured final.
