Improving throughout the day

August 24th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Passage of a cold front last night leaving us with a bit of stratocumulus in the valley which should thin and clear as the day progresses.  Wind is also decreasing and is from WNW  which makes for good dynamic soaring on the ridge.   Thermal quality also good.  Inversion around 2500m which will keep development […]

Unlikely but a chance this evening

August 22nd, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Still very unstable which will continue through until tomorrow.  Moderate SW winds, a bit top end for Lastra even if it was not for the threat of storms.  This evening the wind should veer to the West so we may be able to do an evening flight at Peña Negra.

Light SSW 3800mBase, but CBs later.

August 21st, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

The approaching fronts has made today flyable but nowhere near as good as it has been.  It is unlikely that we can safely fly tomorrow, although the winds are still fine.  Today the winds have moved more to the south.  It is likely that it will come onto PN but we will go earlier, before […]

Big Easy Open XC day.

August 20th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

This is the day before a frontal transition which are usually the epic days.  Friday and Saturday will not be so good, Saturday probably unflyable with a cold front going through.  There after for the DSC group I have arranged for it to be suitably epic! Today there is an inversion at 3800, so climbs […]

Light WNW, climbs to 3800m.

August 19th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Another excellent XC soaring day which could be a Segovia day, but it is likely that the ground level winds will be against us after Avila.  Once again a circuit flight between the two passes would be appropriate.  Convergence in the Avila valley will be much to the south.

Really nice PG conditions.

August 18th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Once again we continue to be affected by the Azores high, any instability and rain affecting only the east of the Peninsula.  Today generally light winds from the NW with limited Cu development in in convergence areas and on mountains. Good quality thermals with climbs to above 3000m by around 1.30pm,  The upper and mid […]

Light NW day with base to 3100m

August 17th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Looks like a mellow day with light wind and some stratocumulus to slow things down early on.  For the early part of the afternoon we are unlikely to go above 2600m.  No predicted overdevelopment with a solid inversion cap around 3100m which should keep things safe.  Most of the instability has moved eastwards now.  Briefing […]

+3000m thermal tops and light winds N to NW

August 15th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

A nice friendly XC day with good quality climbs today going much higher by mid afternoon though with an inversion around 2600m early on.  Although NW we may find it a struggle into wind on the other side of the Pass.  convergence in Gredos and at the Tornavacas Pass and possibly the Villatoro Pass.  It […]

Lighter W and NW flow.

August 14th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Less wind today more from the W low down and moving N at higher levels.  quite a moist airflow so we have almost orographic stye clouds again early on and stratocumulus clouds to our north which should reduce as the morning goes on.  Very good thermal quality once again, however this is capped around 2600m […]

Post Cold frontal NW

August 13th, 2015 - Posted by Steve Ham

Relatively low clouds this morning which is quite normal with the wind to the N and post frontal.  The normal situation is that they should lift by around 11.30 and continue lifting as the day progresses, finishing around 3000m at the end of the day.  Winds should be flyable but top end at times.  Convergence […]
