Light winds, 3000m potential.

August 22nd, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Winds are generally light starting in the SE.  Some convergence to the north of the valley swinging up towards Peñaranda and  beyond.  Good quality climbs with some inversion below below 3000m early in the day , but later just one at around 2950m.  Generally, a good thermal soaring day. Our key decision will be which […]

Sunday 21st.

August 22nd, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

A memorable day as the van broke down on the way to the airport.  However, all good with new hire van.  Evening flight for the new Derbyshire/Dales group with a smoothish N wind.

110 km O&R for Sebastian, and a near 80km circuit for others.

August 20th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Excellent day but not so high, with climbs not often over 2300m, though touching 2600m occasionally. However, powerful strong, especially at the Cemetery near the Pass.  Most of us turned at the Pass excel for Sebastian and Simon.  Eric, Andy and I flew together to Barco via the centre of valley then back to take […]

NW, decent soaring day but limited XC day

August 20th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

A fair amount of status early on which should burn off, but unusually we still have quite low inversions.  However, the direction is perfect for easy soaring on the mountain and winds light enough for pleasant flying and Moderate XC flying between the Tornavacas and Villatoro Pass.  It may be worth going over for some, […]

WNW and a bit strong mid day

August 19th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

The temperature trace and thermal quality will be similar to yesterday.  However, with the passage of another cold front the wind is going to get a little high mid afternoon, but should calm for good evening conditions.   Quite strong already at 8 am at launch, so we may try to go up the hill […]

Lighter NW.

August 18th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Today we have quite inverted conditions which will make getting above 2400 quite difficult for much of the day.  Wind more to the N at Avila with the usual span wise convergence across the valley as we approach Avila. Lighter winds and a slow start to the day will probably allow us a few attempts […]

Lighter winds. NW winds

August 17th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

A much easier day for us with the wind on at PN.  Some lower inversion to deal with and generally a cooler day with early afternoon climbs to around 2600m and maybe late in afternoon to near 3000m.  The NW flow will give us a headwind low down in Avila, so unlikely to be a […]

SW good climbs but still a lot of wind

August 16th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

A day with a lot of yellow dust suspended in the air which will make visibility very poor.  Once again, SW winds and good thermals to over 3000m.  Some streeting and convergence.  Probable development of congestus near Avila, though our area should be free of problems again.  A trough in the East of Spain will […]

Excellent thermals to 3000m +

August 15th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Winds on the strong side to the SW but dropping a little later in the afternoon and moving more West.  An inversion around 3000m, but in some of the convergence areas we may find some large stacked clouds or Congestus.  Storms unlikely.   Good convergence along the Avila Valley N side.  The wind may come […]

Really excellent conditions

August 13th, 2016 - Posted by Steve Ham

Light winds and a high base.  A trace with of  inversion till over 3000m.  Likely convergence along the Avila Valley and likely Headwind as we approach Avila.  NW lower levels so good on the hill.  Probably climbs later to near 4000m.  This is a perfect day for Avila and Back, or the  Tornavacas Pass and […]
