5200m thermal top but high winds

August 11th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Low pressure in the Atlantic is moving slowy up towards the Uk and from tomorrw we should have lighter winds on PN and improved soaring conditions.  Today very little humidity and less upper level instability. High temperature alerts again.  Improved thermal quality, but the wind strength makes paragliding an unrealistic option – even though we […]

Another difficult day for Paragliding Safely

August 10th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Lighter winds than yesterday with  a good chance that it will come on to PN.  However, instability and likelyhood of Large Cu build up which may lead to Cbs.  That did not happen yesterday when the trace showed  it to be  more likely.  Today, more stability, but the early morning signs (AltoCu) are not good.  […]

SW winds (top end) and instability (Cbs likely)

August 9th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Another potentially problematic day if we want easy nice XC soaring conditions – we certainly won´t get them.  The strong S wind further complicated by the Heat Low and upper level instability will give rise to congestus formation in late afternoon if max temp predictions are attained.  Winds lightening later in afternoon but that may […]

Arrival of heat wave – Surada

August 8th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

The development of a low pressure system in the Atalantic is going to favour southerly winds bringing up warm air from Africa.  This will also provoke a heat low at surface level over the Iberian peninsula.  Thermal quality not likely to be good untill later in the afternoon.  Wind strengh may also be a problem.  […]

c3000m. Blue thermals and S wind

August 7th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

A somewhat different flying perspective than we have had for some time. No deep depresion over the Uk and absecne of upper level strong westerlies. Nevertherless, quite a complex distribution of low pressures and frontal systems ruining much of the soaring over Europe. We however seem to have reasonable conditiions with a S flow and […]

10 Days, 34 Hours, 500 Km (Nigel Page)

August 6th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Here is a little article by Nigel who went back a few weeks ago: Flying with Steve Ham and Puri Almansa at Piedrahita is always fun.  I probably fly there too much but I have a problem with UV and the service Steve and Puri provide enables me to fly without fear of having to […]

Light WNW. 2900m

August 6th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

The instability affecting us on Sunday has now moved East leaving us with good soaring and XC conditions.  A light W with blue thermals to just under 3000m.   Possibly early on lower levrel Cumulus will form at lower levels to blue out as the day develops. What can we do?  The winds are light enough […]

Cu at 3100m & W winds

August 4th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

A heat low forming over the SE of Spain with the usual depression over the UK and Irealand. More instability at altitude which may give us some cloud build up but Cbs unlikely. Slightly stronger winds from W than yesterday. Valley trigger temperature 24ºC and inversion around 2600m (blue thermals), but climbs likley later to […]

2600m. West winds. Blue thermals (PB for Anton)

August 3rd, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Similar pattern to yesterday with slightly lower max temp. Thermal quality poorer with conditions inverted around 2600m-2800m which will reinforce by end of day. Winds in the West. OK for flight to Avila, but with thermal quality and probably late start, muchg more would be unlikely. What happened? Better than expected conditions with even a […]

Blue thermals to c2800m. W going NW and dropping.

August 2nd, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

A weak cold front having passed with a low to the East of us.  Conditions not disimilar to yesterday with regards to thermal conditions, though we should have less wind in the Ambles Valley. Blue thermals to around 2800m and invresion reinforcing at that level later in the afternoon. The more northerly aspect may impede […]
