Swing Arcus 7

July 24th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

As we pulled up at take-off today Andreas arrived and plonked in my hand the recently released Arcus 7.  I have always liked the Arcus – in some of its incarnations  of 1 to 7 the most sold glider ever (so Bruce G told me).  Anyway, off with the Mentor2 and on with the Arcus […]

WSW thermals to 3200m but increased instability(111.5km)

July 24th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Upper level wind very light and c15km/hr westerlies in the convective layer and likely convergence in the Ambles valley.  Cu development then rapid build up of congestus clouds once thermal trigger temperature is reach.  Not an ideal situation for stress free paragliding.  Limited XC potential if the forecast is correct as Cbs may build early […]

Light winds and blue thermals to c3000m

July 23rd, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

The temperatures should steadily rise over then next few days with the formation of a heat low over the Iberian Peninsula.  By Wednesday we may see some more instability in the upper levels.  Today very light winds and the dry adiabatic is well to the right.  Probably a late start but then good as the […]

Nigel bags another 3+ hrs

July 22nd, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Nigel has got his aritime up near 30 hrs in the last week. Today, while I was doing the airport run he did an attempt at a return from Barco, but the headwind stoped him near La Aldeauela. Nice evening flight for the new group (though a bit east)

NW going NNE

July 21st, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Generally light winds with predominance of N.  Thermal tops around 3300m with cloud formation and some deeper congestus.  Tricky for Open distace so some form of local circuit probably best between the Cherry Tree Pass and the Villatoro Pass. What happened. A loose plan of flying to Barco the back worked well with most getting […]

3100m NW winds. 2X XCs

July 20th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

With top temp of 29ºC (compared with yesterdays 35ºC), bluethermals to 3100m.  With 33ºC in the plains we may get Congestus forming.  Lighter winds than yesterday and of a more Northely component.  The stronger Westerlies lie above the convective layer.  Fine for a flight to Avila, but probably too North for much further. What Happened […]

More W wind.

July 19th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

Once again high thermal tops though the increased wind from the west and slightly more stable conitions at lower levels will make things tricky early on.  No prospect of return with this much wind  -around 20km/hr at take off level, so open distance is the best option taking care of the 3048m NOTAM after Avila […]

4500m+ thermal tops. Light NW

July 18th, 2012 - Posted by Steve Ham

The classic July scenario riun of epic weather continues.  The ridge of high of high pressure will begin to deteriorate on Thursday, but good conditions will continue.  Stronger SW winds tomorrow favour a big open distance.  The very high base and convergence may make it very difficult to stay under the airspace beyond Avila today.  […]
