^Travelling with a paraglider is sure to take you near or over your baggage allowance. In this section we provide information on the baggage allowance policies of the airlines most commonly used to fly to Madrid here. These are the official airline restrictions, and are applied at the discretion of the check-in clerk. We believe this information is correct, but please check the 'small print' when you book.
Easyjet now charges for each item of 'check-in' luggage per journey. This is £5 if pre-paid, £10 if you pay at the airport. This includes a 20kg weight allowance. Note that if you pay for extra bags your weight allowance is not increased.
The only restriction on hand luggage is the size, 55x40x20cm, there is no weight restriction, you must be able to lift it into the overhead storage locker without assistance. So the cheapest option is to load all your heavy items into your hand luggage on make sure your checked in luggage is less than 20kg.Strictly speaking, you should also pay an additional charge of £16.50 for a paraglider as it is classed as sports equipment, but how would they know unless they look in the bag?
This sports equipment charge gives you an additional weight allowance of 12kg, so it may be cheaper for you to opt for this, rather than pay the excess baggage charge which is £6/kg.
Easyjet also add extra charges of £4.95 for credit cards and £1.75 for debit cards, so when you add the cost of all the additional charges the flight with this 'low cost' airline may not be any cheaper than travelling with B.A. who have a wider choice of flight times.
British Airways hand luggage size limit is 56x45x25cm, with a 23kg maximum weight. They are introducing a 23kg wight limit in check-in luggage in November 2008 but until then there is no extra charge for bags up to 32Kg, the size limit is H+W+L = 158cm which should include most paraglider bags.
They also have an additional 'sports equipment' allowance of 32kg. paragliders are not specifically included but they are not excluded either.
The official baggage restrictions are a follows: hand luggage dimensions may not exceed 55x25x35 cm and the weight limit is 6lbs. The check-in baggage allowance for tourist class is 20kg, with an excess baggage charge of 4€/kg.
Bmibaby charge for each item of 'check-in' luggage per journey. This is £6.99 if pre-paid, £12 if you pay at the airport. The total Checked Baggage allowance is 20kg per person irrespective of the number of bags. If you exceed this limit they charge an additional £6/kg.
You are allowed one piece of hand luggage, with maximum dimensions 55x40x20cm and a maximum weight of 10kg.
If your check-in bags do not fit on the automated luggage belt and need to be handled separately, they will incur an additional handling charge of £22.50. Your weight allowance is still set to 20kg even if you pay this excess.
There is a cost per checked-in bag of £5.99 when pre-booked online, or £10 when paid for at airport. The baggage allowance is 20kg, anything over this amount is charged at £6/kg. regardless of how many bags have been booked.
You are allowed one piece of hand baggage not in excess of 46x30x23cm or 10kg.
Ryanair allow one piece of hand luggage, maximum weight 10kg and maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. They charge for each checked-in bag, £6 for the first bag and £12 for a second bag if booked on-line, £12 if paid at the airport.
Any passenger exceeding their 15kg personal checked baggage allowance will be charged £7.50/kg. They say that large items of sports equipment are, "inherently unsuitable for carriage by airlines operating fast turnarounds such as Ryanair", They charge an extra £25 if you pre-book or £30 if they decided to impose this at the airport.
